Will Smith’s Connection To “The Subtle Art Of Not Giving A F*ck”

Ironically, Mark Manson Helped Will Smith Write His Autobiography

It’s ironic that the same person who wrote this book helped Will Smith write his autobiography! And with this review…the irony doesn’t stop:

“This book hits you like a much-needed slap in the face from your best friend: hilarious, vulgar, and immensely…”

We Should All Talk About Will Smith Slapping Chris Rock

The day after the Oscars, Kamran, Colin (our producer) and I decided to record an impromptu podcast episode about the, “slap heard around the world.” To be honest, I’m not a fan of benefiting from someone’s pain, especially not someone I’ve admired more than half my life. But, to not speak on it, just didn’t feel right either.

What does it mean to not give a f*ck?! I’m pretty sure it doesn’t mean smack Chris Rock in the face after he makes a joke about your wife.

Will Smith Slapping Chris Rock Was About Mental Health and Personal Responsibility

So, we embarked on recording a conversation about the incident in an attempt to make sense of it for ourselves (and our growing community of health-conscious people). The goal was to highlight aspects of the conversation that 99% of the internet community would most likely overlook: mental health and personal responsibility.

Why “The Slap” Is About Mental Health

Will Smith is someone I’ve admired for more than half of my life (as I just mentioned above). When he slapped Chris Rock, I was shocked but not surprised. Why? Because I’ve been following him on social media for the past few years. And even though I’ve only seen a few unfiltered posts from Will, I could tell he was hurting. And after reading his book “Will” I gained a deeper understanding of the character he’s been playing in real life for his entire adult life.

This clip about Will burying his feelings says a lot about how much pain he’s repressed over the years and why he was liable to explode like he did at the 2022 Oscars: Will Smith on burying his feelings

Will Smith has struggled with fear, guilt and rejection since he was young. I didn’t know this and I don’t think most of the world knew this either. Love or hate what he did at the 2022 Oscars, either way, I hope we can remember that he’s human and there’s so much more to him than the success he’s had.

Why “The Slap” Is About Personal Responsibility

Kamran saw another angle to the 2022 Oscars slap incident. How the moment unfolded was an opportunity for us to consider the importance of personal responsibility. In our podcast conversation about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock, Kamran said Will was just as responsible for the joke Chris Rock made as he is for his response to the joke. This only makes sense if you buy into the concept of personal responsibility.

Personal responsibility is when you take full accountability for your actions, decisions and thoughts and more.

Co-hosts, Jon Rankin (left) and Kamran Amiri (right) find deeper meaning in Will Smith slapping Chris Rock.

What Should Happen To Will Smith?!

It’s hard to say what will happen to Will Smith. The world is divided by this incident. After our discussion about it on our new podcast, The Soulsome Podcast, our hope is that each of us can all learn something from it that will help us grow. I want our conversation about this life altering moment to help inspire self-reflection, self-love, empathy and support for one another.

Will Smith and Chris Rock may be entertainers, but they’re also human. Incidents like this one are a clear reminder of this fact. No one is perfect and to hold them to this standard will only fuel more self-destructive behavior throughout society.
